Cooked by an Angel – April 2011

Looking for Angel Food Nutrition Info or Cooking Instructions?

One question I am often asked has to do with nutrition info or how to cook certain items. This is particularly true of the Fast & Flavorful convenience meals. Angel Food Ministries posts this info on their website here. Take a look.

By Not Buying Angel Food, You’re Paying Twice as Much!

I’ve done price comparisons of Angel Food Ministries in the past (in September 2009 and August 2010).  With the introduction of the Bountiful Blessing Box, the Bit o’ Blessing Box and the Pastor Joe’s Premium Box, I decided it was time to take a good look at our local market once again.

The results were quite considerable!

Bit o’ Blessing (9 items @ $21):
Krogers – $51.09; Wal-Mart – $35.04; Low Price Option – $34.05
Angel Food Savings = $13.05 – $30.09 [full analysis]

Signature Box (18 items @ $31):
Krogers – $63.96; Wal-Mart – $57.91; Low Price Option – $54.96
Angel Food Savings = $23.96- $32.96 [full analysis]

Bountiful Blessing (24 items @ $41):
Krogers – $84.96; Wal-Mart – $76.89; Low Price Option – $72.16
Angel Food Savings = $31.16 – $43.96 [full analysis]

Pastor Joe’s Premium (9 items @ $51):
Krogers – $84.71; Wal-Mart – $63.26; Low Price Option – $62.85
Angel Food Savings = $11.85 – $33.71 [full analysis]

So there you have it. Could you use an extra $30? If you were to buy either of these boxes to replace or supplement your regular grocery buying, you’d have it. That’s money that could be used to put onto debt, to pay for something you’ve needed but could not afford or to put into a rainy day savings fund. Either way, it’s a little bit of breathing room for your budgets. And that’s how Angel Food Ministries can provide a hand up like no one else.

Who’s to blame for high food prices?

Good AP article today. It discusses the recent and expected rises in food prices. There’s debate over the cause. Some accuse farmers, others accuse oil industry and others still blame speculators or the ethanol industry.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture report released last month that broke down where each dollar spent on groceries goes. Farmers received an average of 11.6 cents per dollar in 2008, the latest year data was available. That was down from 13 1/2 cents 10 years ago and from 14 1/2 cents in 1993, the USDA report showed.

The rest of the money goes to processing, packaging, transportation, retail trade and food service, which includes any place that prepares meals, snacks and beverages for immediate consumption including deli counters and in-store salad bars.

Regardless of who’s the root of the rise, the fact is, prices are increasing – and they will continue to go up for the foreseeable future:

Corinne Alexander, an agriculture economist from Purdue University, predicted food inflation will average between 4 percent and 4 1/2 percent this year. Normal food inflation is about 2 1/2 percent, she said.”We are going to enter that world again where folks are getting squeezed…

Want to feel less of that “squeeze”? Think about Angel Food.

Recipe – Simple Crock Pot Veggie Soup

Want a simple (and cheap) dinner? Cook a pork or beef pot roast in a crockpot. A couple hours later when the meat is cooked through, add a thawed bag or two of veggies (mixed, green beans, peas n carrots, etc.) with a can of stewed or diced tomatoes. An hour later, enjoy. :) This is a great option for those of you who have trouble finding something to do with the bagged veggies that come in the B1, B2, and/or B3.
