Price Shock? World Food Prices at All Time High

Grocery DazeIf you read newspapers, observe television or radio newscasts or follow online news feeds, you’ve probably seen a blurb about world food prices reaching all-time highs. Indeed, the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said food costs are at their highest point since they began tracking 20 years ago.

If you are like many, you may not have paid much attention to that fact, not realizing it hits so close to home until you start comparing prices on grocery store shelves. That’s when the PRICE SHOCK hit’s you.

In fact, here’s a pretty sobering forecast – U.S. prices will likely creep higher later in the year for all sorts of foods, ranging from poultry to soda to bread.

Curious to know more? Well, this agency has a food index that measures staple food prices and the cost of crops like corn and soybeans. Those levels also have hit their highest levels since 1990.

The price increases have been driven by cereals, meat and dairy products. After rising eight months, global prices of corn, wheat and soybeans are near record levels set in 2008, when riots erupted in countries like Haiti and U.S. food prices jumped. [Seattle Times; March 3, 2011]

A higher global demand for these staples as a new middle class emerges in China and India, crop shortages due to poor yields and natural disasters like floods and earthquakes, an expanding domestic ethanol industry, and the rising fuel prices that increase transportation costs have created a perfect storm that are leading the charge toward high food costs for all of us.

”Millions more people are sliding into poverty as they struggle to afford basic food supplies,” said Thierry Kesteloot, food-policy adviser for Oxfam

But grocery chains are starting to pass along to their customers rising costs for dairy, meat and other foods and household items. Goldman Sachs analyst Andrew Tilton has said he expects consumer food inflation to jump 5 percent by the middle of this year.

A grim outlook? Perhaps. So, what can you do about it?

Certainly much of this is out of our control. But this is the exact moment for which Angel Food Ministries was created. It’s the vision in the hearts of all members of this ministry. We want to help our friends, neighbors and family – our community – to feel less shock when it comes to their food costs.

Anyone can save. Our prices are predictable. They menu may change from month-to-month, but the prices, wuality and amount of food remain fairly fixed. Many people are diligent and are relentless in their pursuit of making sure we all have a fighting chance at feeding and nourishing ourselves and our families.
